An antique popcorn cart is not just a tool to make popcorn - it's more, a lot more. To some families it has become an heirloom, and prices on what seems like a simple old-fashioned popcorn cart can run, at an auction, well above ,000 easily. There is very good reason for this, and it's got a lot more to do with the traditional popcorn machine (that wonderful movie and family past time) than with the popcorn it creates.
The first thing that struck me was the artistry involved with some of them. It is obvious it was not just a simple cart - it was a means of income for a man and possibly his family, and that person made sure there was wonderful presentation. Not only were those carts very practical (they had to be light and easily pushed or pulled from one festival or movie theater to another), they also had to catch the eye and lure the customers.

Popcorn has been known as a popular snack since man and corn met, but the commercial popcorn machine didn't start till the end of the 19th century, and the antique popcorn cart, once it was invented, went in several directions - across the country.
When we talk about popcorn carts, we no longer talk about the history of the mechanics of it; we also have to mention the different ways of preparing popcorn. You see, as each family or popcorn vendor tried to outdo the other, they all claimed to have the best butter, the best oil, the best salt, the best caramel - or the best combination of them all. And of course this presented slightly different tools, measuring cups, holders and bags or buckets according to each individual cart. And I'm not even talking about design and color yet.
Making the choice to purchase a popcorn cart can be lots of fun and quite a learning experience when doing your research. If you're thinking about taking the leap and purchasing one of your own, although there a little pricey it will be well worth it. Its price is based on the historical and cultural value behind this beautiful piece of art. Even if the price raises alarm, just imagine the next birthday party you throw for the kids or BBQ you have for the family - with a nice, antique popcorn cart next to all of the food and snacks laid out. Why not? Not only would the kids love the good old popcorn, maybe the adults who are supposed to be watching over the youngsters would appreciate the site of a popcorn cart. I know I would. Doing it the old-fashioned way might actually be a great choice for all.
